Notes
Although not marked or dated, the present dish was probably made in the leading workshop of Maestro Giorgio Andreoli (circa 1470-1555) in the city of Gubbio, now in the region of Umbria but at the time part of the Duchy of Urbino. The mark of Maestro Giorgio is mostly absent from this type of letter dish. This lack of a mark is not uncommon for the more run-of-the-mill output of the workshop during the 1530s.
Provenance
Acquired by Thomas Gambier Parry before about 1861; around 1990 presumed stolen from The Courtauld; whereabouts unknown until Christie's, London, 22 April 2008, lot 7; withdrawn from the sale and returned to The Courtauld in 2008
Inscriptions
Inscription: C [or] G
