Notes

The two tiles were part of the decorative scheme of one of the most splendid all'antica rooms of the Italian Renaissance, the camera bella of the Palazzo Petrucci (also known as the Palazzo del Magnifico) built for Pandolfo Petrucci (1452-1512), the ruler of Siena, in 1508. The room was fitted out on the occasion of the marriage of Pandolfo's son Borghese to Vittoria Piccolomini, who came from one of Siena's leading families. The tiles were probably made in Siena, to Pinturicchio's design (who may have been the designer of the whole Petrucci enterprise), in an as-yet-unidentified workshop.
