Bowl-shaped boxes with matching airtight covers are rare in Islamic metalwork but were a popular form of export ware from Mamluk Egypt and Syria.
Hemispherical bowls of this shape are typical of the kinds of objects made in the Middle East for export to the west. On many of them, including this bowl, European shields were left blank for the arms of the eventual owner.
