This large jar may have been used to store preserved fruits.
Cipriano di Michele Piccolpasso (1524-1579), a celebrated painter of maiolica, wrote in his Li tre libri dell'arte del vasajo (Three Books of the Potter’s Art) that fruit and flower patterns ‘are truly Venetian, very graceful things’.
