To either side of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child are scenes from Christ’s birth. Above, God the Father is flanked by angels.
Traces of colour and gold leaf are visible on the lining of Mary’s cloak. Originally, she likely held a carved flower. In its place, a delicate stalk was painted with gold over a crack in the ivory.
There are extensive traces of original colour and
gilding on this triptych, as well as some later additions.
Originally the clouds, the lining of the Virgin’s coat and
some of the architectural details would have been
overlaid with blue pigment. In her right hand the Virgin
would have been holding a rose.
