Fry believed that mass production meant that ceramics ‘are reduced by machine turning to a dead mechanical exactitude and uniformity’. He lamented the loss of the expressive and imperfect surface modelling found on handmade pottery. The white tin-glaze on this side plate both emphasises and creates the individual irregularities that Fry preferred.
