This view from Pont Royal looks towards Pont du Carrousel, one of the earliest cast
iron bridges in Paris and a modern innovation when it was unveiled in 1834. The towers and
spire of Notre-Dame Cathedral are also visible in the distance. Pierre Bonnard had painted this same view almost twenty years earlier, but this work is distinguished by its sumptuous palette of mauve, yellow and pink. Bonnard’s admiration for Japanese prints is conveyed in his flattened, decorative use of colour.
