Ernest Stamp (1869-1942), who trained at Hubert von Herkomer’s art school in Bushey in the early1890s, was a painter and printmaker who is today best remembered for his prints reproducing the work of other artists, ranging from Gainsborough, Reynolds and Lawrence to Meissonnier and Frederick Walker. The present print is based on Walker’s 1866 watercolour of the same name (British Museum, inv. 1954,0508.22).
