Label Text

Ernest Stamp (1869-1942), who trained at Hubert von Herkomer’s art school in Bushey in the early1890s, was a painter and printmaker who is today best remembered for his prints reproducing the work of other artists, ranging from Gainsborough, Reynolds and Lawrence to Meissonnier and Frederick Walker. His original compositions are less well known, making this early etching particularly intriguing. Its subject matter is unusual; depictions of etchers at work are rare.

Wheeler Antiques Ltd., Royston, Hertfordshire; from whom purchased by Donato Esposito on 9 November 2022.
