This print, a proof for an illustration published in Le Monde Illustré, 17 February 1877, p. 97 [front-page], depicts the French caricaturist and lithographer Charles Amédée de Noé, known as Cham (1816-1879). It was likely commissioned by the publication in honour of the sitter having recently been named a Chevalier de la Légion l'honneur. A prolific cartoonist, he produced over 40,000 drawings over the course of his career and served on the staff of the famed satirical magazine Le Charivari (whose other notable contributors included Honoré Daumier, Gustave Doré, Paul Gavarni and Nadar) for 30 years. Cham’s staggering output is alluded to in the piles of sketches and the clouds of tumbling putto-like figures that appear on the verge of engulfing him.
