This seminal work was created whilst Long was a sculpture student at St Martin’s College, where Anthony Caro and Philip King were among his tutors. He took a train from London and got off when it reached open countryside and found a suitable field. He walked back and forth until the flattened grass caught the sunlight and became visible as a line, which he then photographed.
The work challenged the idea that sculpture had to be made of material taken into the studio. Instead, he began what would become a life-long interest in making works in the landscape. His subsequent art is inseparable from his experiences of extended and arduous walking expeditions, which have taken him across the globe.
