Cézanne produced only eight prints in his entire career, five being etchings dating from the summer of 1873 when he stayed at Auvers-sur-Oise with Camille Pissarro and Armand Guillaumin, a Paris civil servant. On this occasion all three friends experimented with the etching technique and seem to have adopted a sign as an emblematic signature. Cézanne chose the image of a hanged man, seen here. The spontaneity of this jaunty image of his friend suggests that it was rapidly sketched from life, possibly directly onto the plate.
