Label Text

This illustration accompanied an article on drawing in the influential and widely circulated encyclopaedia edited by Denis Diderot. The upper scene, engraved after a design by Charles-Nicolas Cochin the Younger, is a detailed view of a figure drawing class. Students are shown copying drawings and plaster casts and working directly from a life model. The lower diagram presents the recommended layout of a life class, which became standard in most art schools in the capitals of Europe from the mid-eighteenth-century.

Notes

Plate I from 'Dessein', part of Denis Diderot's and Jean le Rond d'Alembert's 'Encyclopédie'.
