Griffier has reproduced a drawing by Francis Barlow using mezzotint; unusually he has chosen this tonal method for an essentially linear drawing. Griffier accurately translated Barlow’s design from drawing to print, but the more elaborate landscape background seems to be of his own invention. The print was published by John Smith, who was himself known as first-rate mezzotint engraver. Interestingly the roles of both Griffier and Smith are acknowledged in the written inscriptions, whilst Barlow’s role is not.
