Barlow was the most important British wildlife painter of his day, described by the diarist John Evelyn as ‘the famous Paynter of fowle, Beastes & Birds’. Many of Barlow’s closely observed natural history subjects were made into prints, either by Barlow himself or by other printmakers. This drawing may have been made specifically as a design for a print engraved by Jan Griffier (an impression of which is also in The Courtauld's collection).
