Label Text

The Day is one of the first lithographs Matisse made when he returned to the technique after a gap of several years. It is one of a pair of prints that echo the poses and titles of the allegorical sculptures by Michelangelo on the tomb of Lorenzo de’ Medici in Florence. Unusually for Matisse, the figure floats unsupported in space. The sharp cropping that characterised some of his earlier prints has here given way to a sense of harmony and completeness.
