In the centre of this image is the oval-shaped lock changing the level of a passenger boat just visible in the centre; the gap in the wall to the left allowed passengers to get on and off the boat. A tall roofed gateway stands over the lock gates, casting strangely shaped shadows onto the curved wall of the lock; the far bank of the Brenta canal can just be seen through the gateway. In the foreground the bright light picks out a finely dressed patrician man and woman, whilst a butcher and a lacemaker work in the shadows to the left.
