In the centre foreground a passenger boat is leaving the locks at Dolo to join the gondolas and other craft on the Brenta Canal. Having taken the first trial proofs from this plate, Canaletto decided to add further work to the foreground of the image, dramatically strengthening the shadows, particularly on the barge, which is now moving from an area of dark shadow into the light of the river. Unusually in Canaletto's work, this involved extensive cross hatching, which he normally avoided in favour of parallel lines, between which shone areas of clean white paper, suggesting the bright clarity of Venetian light.
