Dolo is a town on the banks of the river Brenta. The river had been canalised in the 16th century, and during Canaletto's lifetime the trip from the Venetian Lagood to Padua was popular among wealthy Venetians; on the far left of this etching is a burchiello, a passenger craft on such a trip. A number of fine villas were built on the banks of the Brenta during the 18th century, including the Villa Andruzzi, the neo-Palladian villa visible to the left. Sticking out of the water are mooring posts which separate the main river traffic from the shallower water.
