The plate from which this etching was printed originally formed part of a larger plate which Canaletto cut into three pieces. Here Canaletto has produced an inventive, imaginary combination of a statue (possibly of the Virgin Mary), a pyramid, and some ruined pillars with antique decoration; to the right is part of a canopy over a bishop's tomb which was divided in two when the plate was cut up.
