This image originally formed the right side of a larger plate, which was cut down by Canaletto to produce two smaller prints; no impressions of the larger plate survive. The images remains surprisingly successful, partly because of the skilful variations in the patterns of lines in the river, the bank and the sky above, with the horizon just pierced by the domes and spires of the distant city.
