The plate from which this etching was printed was cut from a larger plate. However, no impressions exist from the plate before it was cut in two, and it may be that Canaletto destroyed all the prints he took becase he was dissatisfied with the composition. Nevertheless, this image remains interesting for the comparison between the watery view through the arch of the bridge and the airy view through the archway of the gatehouse above.
