Mestre, on the Italian mainland, was during the 18th century a commercial centre through which goods were shipped to and from Venice. Ths is a veiw along the canal from thelanding area, including the warehouses and shipping companies which lined the water's edge. Canaletto achieves an impressive range of tonal effects in the contrast between the brightly lit facade of the inn to the left and the buildings in shadow to the right, separated by the misty haze of the buildings and vegetation in the far distance.
