This etching is based on a drawing which Canaletto signed and isncribed: 'Vista in Padova, esata': 'Seen in Padua, exactly'. In the etching Canaletto changes some fo the buildings and omits the rather messy storage space beneath the arches which takes up the lower part of the drawing, in order to focus on the terrace itself, and the dark figures and plant pots silhouetted against the sunlit wall beyond.
