The Molo San marco, the quay at the end of the Piazzetta, is here the site of a poultry market. The caged birds on the waterfront are ironically juxtaposed with the incarcerated men beneath the striped awning of the prisoners' barge. Beyond this is the dome and tower of San Giorgio Maggiore, Palladio's 16th-century church on an island of the same name.
