Excursions from Venice to the Italian mainland and along the Brenta River to Padua were popular as a summer pastime for wealthy Venetians. This print shows one of the sights on the mainland: the old tower of Marghera (formerly spelled Malghera as in the title here). The 15th-century fortifications, now ruined and abandoned, provided a picturesque setting for fishermen trawling nets from boats or wading in shallower water to catch eels in wicker baskets.
