Label Text

Although this view is dominated by the facade of the Doge's Palace, its title refers to the section of a huge porphyry column which stands on the left by a corner of the Basilica San Marco; a man stands on top of the stone reading a decree to a crowd gathered in the Piazzetta. Canaletto's ability to use etched lines to suggest lighting effects is demonstrated here by the way in which the geometrical pattern on the Palace's pink marble facade appears to shimmer in the bright sunlight.
