This print was taken from an etched plate which was originally part of a larger plate which Canaletto cut into three pieces. The distant town and the tomb in the foreground are both imaginary, although each has some echoes of the architecture of Venice. Canaletto's skill with the etching process is demonstrated by the very slight variations of the parallel horizontal lines which describe the light, airy cloud formations in the sky above the town.
