This is one of a very small number of impressions taken from this plate before Canaletto cut it down the middle, dividing it into two imaginary scenes. The lagoon visible to the right may be based on the Lagoon around Venice; the activities of boatmen on the river and in the boathouses in the centre of the composition are certainly an important aspect of the scene. The date 1741 is inscribed in Roman numerals next to Canaletto's initials on the house to the left (MDCCXLI A.C.).
