The gates and some of the buildings of the walled town shown here have been thought to resemble Padua, and the figure on the column in the centre echoes the staue of Saint Theodore in Venice, but overall this view shows an imaginary rather than an actual place. Canaletto seems to have been particularly interested in the contrast between the decayed mill-house in the right foreground and the grandeur of the city beyond.
