Label Text

This view of houses dramatically framed by the arches of a portico does not depict an actual location; it is an imaginary view, or capriccio, skilfully composed by combining invented and real elements. Canaletto appears to have been self-taught as an etcher and developed a highly individual style in his brief period of activity as a printmaker. The tightly packed, wavy parallel lines describing the sky and clouds are typical of his work, vividly conveying the hot, moisture-laden
atmosphere of a summer day in Venice.
