One of the 'invented' views in Canaletto's series of etchings, Views of Venice, this image combines the ruins of ancient buildings with contemporary Venetian houses, viewed from beneath a Roman portico. The print displays Canaletto's impressive control of the etched line, from the wide, heavily-bitten lines describing the rough earth in the foreground, to the fine wispy tendrils describing the smoke hazily merging into the sky from the chimney of the building in the centre.
