This series was dedicated to Canaletto's patron, the collector and dealer Joseph Smith, who became the British Consul in Venice in 1744. The inscription reads: 'Views / Some taken from [actual] places / others invented, / by / Antonio Canal / and by him etched and set in perspective / humbly [dedicated] to themost illustrious / Joseph Smith / Consul of His Britannic Majesty to the Most Serene / Republic of Venice. / In sign of homage and esteem.'
