Grant developed the ‘lily pond’ pattern from a sketch of a goldfish pond made at Durbins, Fry’s home in Surrey. After Grant had mixed his paint ready for use, Fry suggested he should pour the paint directly from the cans to give the design spontaneity. Lilies, water and goldfish merge into a swirl of abstract shapes that suggest the shifting patterns of colour and light on the pond’s surface. Grant used this design for tables and, challenging the horizontal nature of water, on the vertical panels of this screen.
