Sumptuously decorated chests (called cassoni) were made in association with the marriages of the Italian elite at this date. This example belongs to a group of chests depicting animals in moulded and gilded gesso; the number of species represented here, including lions, eagles and dogs, is unusual.
The gilding, which has darkened over time, would originally have made a splendid visual effect.
