Blake made this lively watercolour on a tour of France and northern Italy in 1865–66, one of several sketching trips she made in Europe. The loose handling and sparse preliminary underdrawing, as well as the relatively small size of the sheet, suggest that she painted it on the spot with some speed. She used a dry brush to render the surface of the river, evoking the rapid flow of water over a shallow riverbed.

Inscriptions

Inscription: Inscribed, mount (removed and cut down), " F. Blake / Nov.15th, 1865" (ink, by the artist). Historic Mount (now removed), inner recto: lower right, graphite: "S3134A"; Verso: upper right, graphite: "Blake / River Siagne / L [in a box, adjacent is a check mark] / P ([in a box, adjacent is a check mark]"; all lower right, graphite: "900" (enclosed in square); "?Frame?"; BROUGHTON / 836218"; "@" (in green ink); "97624" (circled).
