Amelia Long, Lady Farnborough (nee Hume) (1772-1837) was a draughtswoman and watercolourist specialising in landscape and botanical subjects; many of her landscapes depict places in northwest Kent, especially Bromley, where she spent most of her life. She studied drawing with Thomas Girtin and Henry Edridge and was an honorary exhibitor at the Royal Academy (1807-1822) and at the British Institution in 1825.
The present drawing depicts the parkland surrounding Combe Bank (or Coombank), the seat of the Campbell family, in Sundridge near Sevenoaks in Kent; the distant Kent Downs are framed by two groups of massed trees. Although undated, the signature ‘A. Long’ suggests that she made the drawing before 1826, when she became Lady Farnborough (after which point she is known to have signed her works ‘AF’). The large scale and assured handling of
both the trees and the subtly indicated clouds demonstrate Long’s skill and confidence as a draughtswoman.
