The painter, topographical draughtsman and aquatint engraver Charles Tomkins (1757-1823) spent his entire career in London, although he travelled within Britain in search of his subjects. This watercolour view of the Winchester Tower at Windsor Castle – a well-known landmark that attracted the attention of other watercolourists, including Paul Sandby – dates from early in his career. It exhibits not only the attention to architectural detail typical of a
topographical artist but also a sensitivity to atmosphere, seen in the rendering of the louring clouds in the background
