This drawing by Italian Renaissance artist Parmigianino has been connected to the figure of Joseph of Arimathea in the Entombment of Christ, a composition the artist further explored in a print (an impression is in the collection; G.1978.PG.36) and in a related drawing, also at The Courtauld (D.1978.PG.97).
This drawing demonstrates how carefully Parmigianino prepared his compositions through multiple studies of single figures before laying out the compositions more fully, and offers an important insight into his creative process.
