Few of Saunders’s Vorticist works are entirely non-figurative, making this drawing unusual. Against vertical panels of yellow and green emerges a form composed of overlapping diagonal planes of colour, appearing to project from the surface of the sheet.

Numerous graphite lines are visible through the watercolour. This lack of finish, as well as the work’s decorative quality, suggest that it may relate to a series of murals for London’s Restaurant de la Tour Eiffel, on which Saunders collaborated with Wyndham Lewis, the leader of the Vorticists, in 1915.
