Edward Dayes, one of the most respected topographical draughtsman and drawing masters of his day, encouraged his pupils to study the use of light and shade in the drawings of admired masters. In this scenic view of Ouse Bridge — a popular site with artists — Dayes concentrates on the atmospheric effects of shadows and dappled moonlight on the water, the ripples executed with a loose, undulating line. The forbidding sky and silhouetted figure of a woman add a poetic note to the moonlit scene.
Notes
Dayes recorded in his 1798 diary that on May 18 he 'Begun a View of Ouse Bridge' and on June 6 he 'Finished a small view of Ouze Bridge'.
