Inscriptions

Watermark: Watermark: centre: “D & C BLAUW” (no exact match in Heawood, but Churchill dates Dirk Blauw & Co 1733-1827; Heawood 3268 is the same but with a “IV” beneath, and with this mark acting as the Countermark to the coat of arms, such as that appears on D.1986.XX.4, so perhaps these are the mark and countermark. Heawood 3268 is English paper c. 1769).

Inscription: Recto, all artist’s hand: upper right, brown ink: “the Same Ornaments as round the room / Surbase of the Medal Cases” and written vertically “face of the dado”; centre, brown ink: “frie[‘e’ superscript]ze Cornice and Pillaster of the Medal Cases”; right centre, graphite: “Surbase under the book Case”; lower centre, brown ink: “Profile of the Pillaster + doors of the Medal Case” and below that “fluting.”; lower left, brown ink: “G / face of the Wall”. Verso, all artist’s hand, but partially obscured by wash: upper centre, brown ink: “Section of the Study on […]”; centre, brown ink: “NB this door will not Come exactly in the middle of the room / its Situation will depend upon its place in the Library”.
