Label Text

"The best painter of still life that every existed" is how the Victorian author and critic John Ruskin described Hunt. Still lifes such as this appealed to Ruskin through the simplicity of their subject matter and the natural sense of beauty apparent in objects themselves. Ruskin found in Hunt's work the embodiment of one of his central artistic principles: the need to respond to the visible world with truth, clarity and objectivity.
