In spite of its title – invented by the Victorian critic John Ruskin – this watercolour does not directly depict the aftermath of a shipwreck. Several elements do, however, imbue the coastal scene with a sense of solitude and even despair: the intense palette of reds, blues and yellows, the moonlight on the sand and waves (which Turner evoked by rubbing and scratching through the watercolour wash), and the lone dog howling at the sky. Rather than illustrating an incident, it can be understood as an exploration of the nature and mood of the sky and sea.
Provenance
purchased by friend of the artist, Reverend William Kingsley (1815-1916), 1857; by descent to Mrs Kingsley; her sale, Christie's (London), 14 July 1916, lot 27; purchased there by Thomas Agnew & Sons (London); purchased there by Sir Stephen Courtauld (1883-1967), 5 July 1917; by descent to Jeanne Courtauld, 1972; presented by Jeanne Courtauld in memory of Stephen Courtauld, 1974
