This watercolour belongs to the series of fifty views of the Rhine between Mainz and Cologne that were inspired by Turner’s second continental tour in 1817 and were bought by Walter Fawkes. The scenic river, bordered by cliffs and castles, provided Turner with many appealing features. Beyond the heavily shaded promontory, the eye is drawn to the opposite slopes on which stands Burg Katz, its dramatic silhouette bathed in warm evening sunlight. The use of paper tinted with grey wash allowed Turner to intensify the shadows, further enhancing the sombre beauty of the scene.
