This view is one of a large group of watercolours of Windsor Castle and its surroundings by Paul Sandby. A glimpse of the town is seen through the lofty arches of the gateway. The notice on the base of the right-hand tower shows it to be the debtors’ prison. As in many of Sandby’s topographical works, the scene has been enlivened with animated figures of all types, adding interest and humour to an otherwise formal composition.

Inscriptions

Watermark: Watermark: unable to check drawing as is laid down. One is visible in raking light on the mount, right centre of the verso, but unable to make out - the Spooner 2005 catalogue identifies it as "VILLEDARY" but it appears rather to be a coat of arms.

Inscription: Recto: within the drawing, lower left on wall, grey ink, artist’s hand: “WINDSOR / and / EATON. MACH / Sold out”; within the drawing, lower right on wall, grey ink, artist’s hand: “Pray remember / the Poor Confin’d / Debtors”; lower left corner, gold paint, signed and dated: “P Sandby Pinxt 1767”. Mount (artist's), Verso: lower left corner, graphite: “The Town Gate + Debtor’s Prison / Windsor Castle / P. Sandby 1767.”.

Collector's mark: none.
