During his 1797 tour of the south-western counties of England, Girtin developed a richer, darker-hued palette. With characteristic lack of concern for detail, his handling here is both naturalistic and abstract. Note, for instance, the summary marks on the tree trunks and barely delineated facial features. Girtin is unlikely to have observed the scene, as the tumbledown barn and stock figures so clearly conform to picturesque convention.
