In his early career Girtin rarely featured cottages and farms, but such scenes increased as his dependence on the market for antiquarian topography declined. His preoccupation in the mid to late 1790s with rural buildings was partly encouraged by his father-in-law, whose Essex farmhouse properties he depicted in a similar in style to this drawing. Wispy smoke from the chimney creates a homely air, as do the rustic couple who play a significant role in defining the character of the scene.
