Born and trained in Calais, Francia left for England in 1790 where he worked with Girtin and other distinguished watercolour painters before returning to Calais in 1817. During the 1820s he travelled extensively along the coast of northern France, sketching the scenery and shipping. This unidentified view shares features with similar scenes drawn near St-Omer. The panoramic landscape is dominated by a wooden beacon which punctuates the wide, placid sky. Numerous small studio watercolours such as this preserve something of the spontaneous informality of Francia’s sketches.
