Grant worked on interior decorative schemes throughout his career, both with Vanessa Bell and Roger Fry, and on his own. This figure design is an example of Grant's ability to capture the essence of a form with minimal handling. Here, he explore the limits of figuration, focusing on the silhouette of the dancer and the resulting negative space. The sheet emphasises Grant's interest in shapes and composition, as opposed to the narrative in art. The bold use of colour and flatness of the figure may have been inspired by Matisse, whom he met in 1909.
